Khumai: I wish I could have spent more time
Jiwan Shrestha
Last year, I had the opportunity to embark on a two-day trek to Khumai Dada. We began our journey early in the morning from Pokhara, ascending the uphill stairs. After a couple of hours, we reached a local tea house in a village where we enjoyed breakfast. From there, we continued trekking uphill to Hille, where we were treated to a delicious Dal Bhat lunch.

Following a brief rest, we resumed our trek, navigating through forested pathways in the remote area. Although we maintained a steady pace, the journey was challenging yet fulfilling. We passed several tea houses along the way, providing us with necessary breaks and restroom facilities. As we ascended, the rapid change in altitude revealed breathtaking views from the hilltops.

After a long day of trekking, we finally arrived at Khumai Dada, situated at an altitude of approximately 3,500 meters. It was an exhausting day for all of us, having started from 800 meters and reaching 3,500 meters in a single day—a decision that, in hindsight, might not have been the most prudent. Fortunately, we were able to secure accommodation despite the hotel being nearly full. The night was chilly, but we spent it warmly, enjoying a good meal and singing with fellow trekkers.

The following morning, we set off at 4 AM for Korchan Dada, which stands at an elevation of 3,700 meters. The view was simply majestic, with the mountain ranges clearly visible. The destination felt like a slice of heaven above the hills, making the strenuous trek truly worthwhile.
Later that day, after lunch, we began our descent back to Pokhara, retracing our steps and safely returning to the city. The entire journey, along with the destination, was incredibly enjoyable. While many trekkers typically spread this trek over 3-4 days, we completed it within two days. However, I wish I could have spent more time in such beautiful places within our country. Though the trek was relatively short and not highly elevated, for someone like me with no prior trekking experience, it was an extraordinary experience.
