WITHOUT EARTH, NO ONE WILL TAKE BIRTH
WORLD ENVIRONMEMT DAY
by Dahlia Tera
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day, promoted by the United Nations for encouraging world awareness and action to protect our environment, is:
‘REIMAGINE. RECREATE. RESTORE’, especially ‘ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION with the beginning of the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
What does it mean concretely?
Shortly, it means for example: growing trees, greening cities, rewinding gardens, changing diet and cleaning up rivers and coasts……
It is not a question here of speaking as a scientist of phenomena which are studied by experts; we would not have the capabilities .. but, in our small way, we would like to help raising everyone’s awareness of the urgency of the problems.
Glaciers and forests’ fires threaten us Nepali maybe more than others… we know it…
And how to ignore this so important and necessary day dedicated to Environment in a global context were everyday we witness environmental catastrophes, from the gigantic uncontrollable fires to the very fast melting of glaciers, from the disintegration of the polar ice floe to the phenomena of desertification…
And today … all eyes focused on the coast of Sri Lanka, this paradise island, champion of biodiversity and now threatened victim of an unprecedented ecological disaster basically destroying the whole bottom of the sea…
Fire has raged on the vessel MV X-Press for 12 days; vain efforts to tow the boat into deeper waters away from the country’s main port in the capital Colombo..
And now this gigantic chemical-laden cargo ship is sinking !! With all dangerous goods, nitric acid and all these things and the oil of the ship.
Hundreds of tonnes of oil from fiuel tanks….The ship was carrying 25 tonnes of highly corrosive acid which can be used in the manufacture of fertilizers and explosives and several chemical and cosmetics…
So… in the face of these enormous disasters, in the sea, in the mountains, in the country, in the sky… what does the Environment Day mean for a normal citizen, for a normal inhabitant of the earth?
Protecting the environment means taking measures and applying them to limit or eliminate the negative impact of human activities on the earth.
And individually, we can also do something… problems are not solved in one day a year!
So we can:
-eat differently by buying local and seasonal products and avoiding waste.
-rethink our energy consumption. ( renewable energy)
-move differently ( less gasoline)
-limit waste ( especially plastic)
-limit water consumption
-reduce the impact of digital (computers, tablets, smartphones..)
Protecting the environment means small daily gestures and behaviors that, put end to end, can change many things…
So, why is the World Environment Day and clearly not just this one day, so important and meaningful?..
Because:
Protecting the environment means protecting our source of food and drinking water.
Everything we eat and drink comes from Nature.
Protecting our food source means preserving the survival and therefore the future of humanity .
Protecting the environment is protecting our life! And that, only our environment can provide it to us.
Gradually, man becomes aware of the dangers he poses to the planet and begins to restore environments that he has transformed.
‘EARTH IS THE ONLY PLANET TO HAVE LIFE, SAVE THE EARTH!
WITHOUT EARTH, NO ONE WILL TAKE BIRTH.
IF YOU DESTROY THE EARTH, YOU DESTROY THE CHANCE OF LIFE.
SAVE EARTH TO CONTINUE LIVING HERE.
JOIN HANDS TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT!’
