“IS THE HEART ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE ?” – asked the child.

While he was playing a game to learn the various parts of the human body, that had to be inserted in the right place, a bit like a puzzle, the child very seriously asked: “But is the heart always in the same place? Does it move every now and then?”

I thought about it and, very seriously too, I answered:

The heart always stay in the same place: on the left. And, in the meantime, I thought and tried to explain:

One day, you will grow up and then you will understand that the heart lies in a thousand different places, without really inhabiting any one place.

It rises in your throat when you are excited; Or it falls in your stomach when you are afraid or hurt. There are times when it beats accelerate and it seems to want to come out of your chest.

Other times, instead, it changes with the brain. As you grow, you will learn to take your heart and place it in other hands. And most of the time, it will come back a little bruised. But, don’t worry about it. It will be even more stronger and as beautiful. But you will understand this after a long time. There will be days when you will believe that you no longer have a heart. That you have lost it. And you will struggle to look for it in a memory, in a perfume, in a gaze of a passerby, in the old pockets of a coat run down….. in a word , in a special picture.

Then there will be also another day, a sad day. That day you will understand that not everyone has a heart.

But YOU, listen to yours
Whether it flies or sinks,
Whether it is silent or explodes,
Whether you feel it light as a butterfly or heavy as a boulder,
Whether it sings , cries, dances or sleeps,
Even in different places.
