COMING BACK HOME
ASHOK SILWAL
Every day, no matter how it went, we return HOME. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small, full of things or minimalist, silent or noisy, in the city or in the countryside, on the top of a mountain or on the seashore. A HOUSE is much more than four walls and a roof and it is not just a question of space.
There is a substantial difference in content between HOUSE and HOME. Generally, HOUSE is a building while HOME is the family living in a HOUSE.
To live does not mean to occupy a position in space (where our HOUSE is) or to be surrounded by something (the walls): it means to weave such an intense relationship with certain things and people that even our happiness our personality is, in some way, dependent one. When we think of HOME, we think of the people we love, such a family or friends. The HOME becomes a symbol of the bonds we create. It is also the space where we grow, where we learn to walk, to speak and more generally, to discover the world.
Every corner has its own story: the kitchen where we gather for dinner, the little corner where we hide away to read or be silent when the other rooms become too noisy, the balcony or roof terrace where we go when we need some fresh air or a ray of sunshine on the face. These spaces, little by little, are as if they were transformed into people who, based on our mood, welcome us, comfort us or protect us, just like those who know us and know what we need at that moment.
Afte all, it has little to do with the need to have a roof over your head: living, backing HOME, means welcoming into an intimate and personal space that portions of the world made up of people, animals, things, smells, colors, songs, that make possible WHO we are.
