Feels punished, something is missing

LIKE LITTLE BIRDS IN A CAGE

By Ashok Silwal

We are so strangely made
That the more one thing is denied us,
The more it attacks us, it makes us want.
Probably it is not a great sign
Of balance and wisdom:
We should know how to be happy
With what we have inside too…
But forbidden choices sometimes
Take on a particular charm.
Secret taste of risk…?
Silent desire to compete…?
Willingness to prove yourself…?
To push your limits forward…?
To not care advice…?
And just do your own thing….

Corona filled our lives with prohibitions of all kinds;
Not least moving and traveling.
It put such restrictions and fears
That we have been and we are
All closed, somewhat, in a routine.
We all feel a bit like birds in a cage.

Whoever was used to traveling,
Very near or very far, it does not matter,
Feels punished, something is missing.
Because traveling is growing up, is living.

Seeing and contemplating different landscapes,
Flowers, trees, skies… streets and homes;
Meeting new people in different behaviors and clothes;
Learning different habits, celebrations, Gods;
Hearing different ways of speaking, singing, and dancing;
Breathing different scents, eating different food,
Trying different flavors…
All these mysterious, unusual, surprising,
Unfamiliar and unexpected experiences
Make you modest…..

The wonder of observing, the joy of discovering,
The lesson of tolerance,
Walking to the horizon…….

Because traveling is never a matter of money
But of courage:
It has the power of changing you,
Becoming aware of the tiny place
You occupy in the world.
And everything looks different to you.

May we soon go back to move and travel
In the enthusiasm of the astonishment!
