IF SHE WERE A TOWN/COUNTRY, SHE WOULD BE PARIS/NEPAL
By Ashok Silwal
IF SHE WERE A FLOWER, SHE WOULD BE A SUNFLOWER.
She might as well be the humble daisy or the delicate forget-me-not; but the bright and vivid yellow petals of the sunflower are better suited to her energetic doing, to her liveliness, always facing the sun especially when it rises, she never sees (and if she sees them, she doesn’t say it) the shadow, because always trying to be positive, always pushing me to keep going.
In orange and yellow, she wants to give to herself and of herself an image in the rounded shape of a balloon of joy and life connected with sun and light.
She is my friend for her sunny and generous character who has words of encouragement and radiates and transmits me strength outside and inside.
IF SHE WERE AN ANIMAL, SHE WOULD BE A BUTTERFLY OR AN HORSE.
Lightness and elegance. Refined both, colorful brittle flight in the sky, solid and safe galloping on the ground. And they are not antithetical: the horse and the butterfly are freedom too, desire to see new things, to experience unusual emotions, to risk a little off the beaten path.
She is my friend because I like and ‘envy’ this light force, I would like to fly and gallop with elegance like her, trying to get rid of some conditionings.
IF SHE WERE A BOOK, SHE WOULD BE A NOVEL TELLING A STORY.
She would not be a philosophical treatise. She would be a story that tells concrete events and true feelings, in which to find ourselves. A narration that contains descriptions, reflections, people, and environments, life moments, beautiful and ugly. She would like to get involved, to discover and learn some new aspects, some unknown late.
She could be a European novel of the nineteenth century like ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë, ‘Madame Bovary’ by Flaubert, or ‘Les Misérables’ by Victor Hugo. And more recently, ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ by Hemingway.
She is my friend because reading gives her energy, satisfaction, tranquility, curiosity and she loves talking about what she read.
IF SHE WERE A COUNTRY, SHE WOULD BE NEPAL.
For the passion, this country arouses inside her. She loves the union of extraordinary landscapes and profound culture. She loves hiking on a mountain path silently and, in the same silence, meditating in a temple. She loves the fresh air on her face, the colors of the sari, the smell of spices, the confusion in the streets, the rice fields, the tropical vegetation, the smiles, and the kindness of people. She is curious about Hindu traditions and practices. She has a very open mind.
She is my friend because she understands and feels the soul of this country, she is passionate and fascinated by it.
IF SHE WERE A TOWN, SHE WOULD BE PARIS.
Because ‘Paris is always Paris’! ‘The City of lights’, ‘La Ville Lumière’ and old and new city, that shines for art, innovation, and dynamism, for History, an elegant city, immense and small.
Paris has something sculptural, decided, a little ‘arrogant’ and self-confident.
She is Paris because I know I can count on her; she always will try to find encouraging and positive answers to my questions.
She is my friend because of her eclectic personality: the technique and manual skills of the Tour Eiffel, the Art of the museums, the spirituality in Notre Dame, the poetical steps of the walks along the Seine river.
She is my friend because she gives me solidity and enthusiasm, strength, and a sense of freedom.
IF SHE WERE A GARMENT, SHE WOULD BE A WHITE SHIRT.
The white shirt is the simplest and the most elegant outfit. A white shirt solves all the ‘problems; of how to present yourself. It must be clean and ironed but even if it is not perfect, it has its own charm. It is both rigid and fluid on the body, in the office as in the free time. It imposes charm and certain authority. White is a color without color, snow, purity.
She is my friend because as a white shirt, she is elegant and solves many ‘problems’. I always have one in the closet and I love wearing it.
She makes me feel safe because she is my friend.
IF SHE WERE A COLOUR, SHE WOULD BE BLUE.
It is the color of her eyes, like the sea and like the sky. Blue means deep feelings, transparency, and loyalty, a calm person with moderating skills, and able to establish balance, equilibrium. Blue is the color of harmony and serenity, of relaxation; it has something magical and mysterious especially when it is dark.
She is my ‘blue’ friend because of her qualities of determination, her ability to cope with difficult situations, her stable mind, and her depth of character.
But I don’t want to bore you.
My friend could be an infinite number of things.
A LANDSCAPE and she would be a mountain landscape with a path in nature and the snow-capped peaks in the distance.
A PAINTING and she would be Van Gogh’s Sunflowers or Gauguin Tahitian women.
A MUSIC and she would be ‘The Four Seasons’ by the Italian Vivaldi.
AN ACTRESS and she would be the American Meryl Streep.
A PIECE OF FURNITURE and she would be a desk where to write…….
A DRINK and she would be a glass of wine.
I wish everyone could experience a true and unconditional friendship.
It is a strong feeling and quite difficult to define.
It is said that the harmony between two people is measured in how many explanations you do not need to give…..
There is no give and no take, but: empathy, understanding, listening and talking, sharing, availability, generosity togetherness …
In the joys and in the sorrows,
In the advice and in the encouragements,
In the positive and the negative ‘judgments’,
In agreeing or not,
Acceptance of the other with qualities and flaws….
For all these reasons she is my irreplaceable and extraordinary FRIEND.
…
