Citizenship in Nepal
A citizenship certificate is considered the most important formal legal document and is required to obtain other identity documents in Nepal. Without a citizenship certificate, individuals cannot register on the voters’ list.
The Nepal Citizenship Act 1964 was first promulgated on 28 February 1964 and it provides for single citizenship for the entire country to inherit Nepali nationality. The Constitution of Nepal regulates provisions for Nepali nationality in Articles 8, 9, and 10.
Under the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2006, a person who was born in Nepal before mid-April 1990, who has permanent domicile and has been continuously living in Nepal throughout their life can apply to obtain citizenship of Nepal on the basis of birth.
A man or woman who is married to a Nepali citizen is required to submit an application to become a citizen of Nepal. Evidence of their marriage is also needed.
Naturalized citizenship is the citizenship given to those individuals, after legal procedures, who do not qualify to acquire citizenship by birth or by descent.
If a person who is more than 16 years old wants to acquire a citizenship certificate on the basis of birth or descent, they are required to apply for the same by including with the application the Nepali citizenship certificate of one’s father, mother, or close relative in his lineage, one’s birth certificate, the certificate attesting one’s lineage, essential documents, and the recommendation of the Local authorities that are concerned.
